A universal human emotional response is called anxiety. This usually alerts us to possible danger. We may feel it when stepping into the land of uncertainty (job relocation, meeting future in-laws, interviewing, starting school, new relationships, and job promotions). Therefore, some anxiety can be optimal for many kinds of tasks and performances. Anxiety Disorder kicks in when a person becomes overwhelmed within particular situations and circumstances or what we assumed will happen.
Types of Anxiety Disorders:
- Panic disorder- One can feel the terror that strikes at random. During a panic attack, you may also sweat, have chest pain, and feel palpitations (unusually strong or irregular heartbeats). Sometimes you may feel like you’re choking or having a heart attack.
Social anxiety disorder (called social phobia)- One can feel overwhelming worry and self-consciousness regarding everyday social situations. One believes that others are judging, or one feels embarrassed or ridiculed.
- Specific phobias- One feels intense fear about a specific object or situation, such as heights or flying. This fear causes one to avoid ordinary situations.
- Generalized anxiety disorder-One has feelings of excessive, unrealistic worry and tension with little or no reason.
Symptoms of Anxiety Disorder:
All the above anxiety disorder can share the following symptoms:
- Panic, fear, and uneasiness
- Sleep problems
- Not being able to stay calm and still
- Cold, sweaty, numb, or tingling hands or feet

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10 ESV).
