The words “Back to School” reminds us that the end of summer is approaching. It notifies all students (from pre-schools, through elementary, middle and high schools, into undergraduates, graduates, internships and doctorate candidates) that education is an ongoing process which requires the students’ alertness, the professors’ patience and compassion for subjects taught. Returning to the world of education (if we took a summer break) energizes us as parents, students, educators, or support groups to stay teachable and appreciative of the various learning materials, instructors’ unique teaching and constructive criticisms, and unwanted but needed mentors’ advice through words of encouragement. As we start back to school as either, students, or support persons, let us equip our back to school back-packs with the following supplies and skills:
The mind of Christ- “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had” (Philippians 2:5, NLT).
In humility stay teachable- “Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones” (Proverbs 3: 7-8, NLT).
Don’t be offensive, angry, or bitter when receiving constructive correction or criticism- “Open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful” (Proverbs 27: 5-6, NKJV).
