At times we can be very aggravated and frustrated at children’s behavior. We tend to forget that they have feelings, opinions, and needs. Their actions, deeds and responses that the children who appear to be or who are actually misbehaving are trying to tell us what is going on internal (soul care) and external (physical care) and need some help.
Below are suggestive three steps to redirect our children’s’ behaviors:
1. Check our emotional state-Make sure our emotional state is not escalating the situation.
2. Praying try to understand what our children are trying to communicate. What need are they trying to get met?
Need to feel valuable
Need to feel respected
Need to experiment and explore
Physical need (tiredness, hunger, or sickness)
Need to belong or be included
Need to be taught a skill
Need to feel supported
Need to feel wanted
Need to feel powerful/influential
Need to feel loved
Need to be stimulated
Need to be heard
3. Meet the unmet need or redirect the behavior-for example when taking children with us or longer than one-hour shopping trips or meeting, remember they get bored so prepare in advance.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it” (Prov. 22:6).
