When defining a crisis, we think of the following terminologies: trails, tribulations, health issues, financial disasters, tests persecutions, sufferings, hardships, adversities, pains and afflictions. Our thought focus is negative.
A biblical character who suffered persecution was Paul. Paul’s physical health was challenged. His spiritual transformation led to him becoming persecuted versus his previous lifestyle of victimizing others for their faith in Christ. Paul’s decision to not eat or drink for three days affected his mental and emotional state.
Crisis is our internal reactions to any external hazards. We can transition through the hardship of crisis, grow in God’s grace, enrich and improve our lifestyles and others or we can choose to detour from wholistic lifestyle balance (spirit, soul, and body) by choosing to gravitate towards dissatisfaction, pain, and dissolution.
Causes of Crisis-We are thrown off balance by unexpected hurt or disappointment by persons or through situations, or events. It is a loss of some kind. There are levels of crisis according to each person’s perspective of the person’s situation, health and income status, soul care, spiritual formation, and physical health care.
Elements of Crisis-Frist is the hazardous event. This initiates the chain reaction of events that culminates in a crisis. For example, a college lady founds out she is pregnant or your spouse hands you divorce papers. Next, one can enter the vulnerable state. One’s immune system is low and one’s coping mechanism is low. Then, one engages in the precipitating phase. This is where one feels overloaded, feels overwhelmed, and feels as though he or she can not handle anymore drama. Finally, one enters the state of active crisis. This is where one verbally proclaims, “I cannot handle this situation”. The following four indicators of this state are: symptom of stress (psychological, physiological or both), an attitude of panic or defeat (one feels helpless and overwhelmed), a focus on relief (get me out of this situation is the plea and cry), a time of lowered efficiency (response to situations and interaction with others is within the 60% range compared to his or her giving 100%.
Wholistic Balance-during this time, the person must walk by faith and not by feelings, thoughts, and energy levels. This is the time to move a little slower, maintain or incorporate fitness activities and routines, eat mostly healthy food (90% healthy and allowing 10% to food to fall within unhealthy snacks when needed), acknowledge, deal, accept, and give one’s emotional state over to God. Remove oneself from negative people, Facebook, twitter, emails, situations, and circumstances that keeps one’s emotional mood low, sad, and depress. Incorporate or maintain coping mechanism that surrounds one with peace, contentment, joy, and God’s love. One must stay prayerful, meditate on uplifting spiritual quotes (Bible) or positive faith declaration, and maintain uplifting friendships. Remember
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever” (Psalms 23).
