The Bible gives us plenty of illustrations about biblical characters who were sidetracked from receiving advice from others or who operated in fear. Abraham lied about Sarah being his wife in order to save his life (Genesis 12: 10-20; Genesis 20: 1-18). Eve feared the thought of not knowing good and evil; therefore, submitted to Satan’s lie (Genesis 3: 1-6). Aaron chose to follow the advice of “the discontented congregation” who were waiting on Moses to return from his 40-day visit from Mount Sinai (Exodus 32).
As we ponder over our own personal and professional choices, we notice how many times we detoured from our own agenda to follow others’ agenda or their personal agenda for our lifestyles. How many times have we heard someone say to us you can’t do that; you don’t have the credentials or qualifications or experiences to apply or make a career changes. We have heard loved ones and friends tell us you will die from cancer, a heart attack, or obesity since it is a part of your family’s health history.
We do not doubt that those suggestions and facts do exist; however, we are stopping them from manifesting within our lifestyle through our faith and belief in God’s word. God’s word motivates and encourages us that “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).
