Missing loved ones, unrealistic giving and receiving expectations, financial pressures, and excessive self-inflicted commitments cause us to enter the anxiety and stress twilight zone.  Our family gatherings can be fun, energizing, and exciting festivities or they can end with us feeling overwhelmed, depressed, and exhausted.  The social groups, baking, family intimacy, or lack of these things and people can leave us in a chaotic state or just plainly lonely.

Suggestive tips for incorporating within our interactions and choices during our family gatherings:

  1. I can’t get it all done! Know our physical, mental, and income limitations. Prioritize events and interactions concerning time management and dates. If possible, avoid last-minute decisions.
  2. This isn’t how I thought it would be! Avoid operating from a self-expectation zone. Stay flexible and open to change when dealing with others. Stay prayed up and Word up. Keep our expectations realistic in Christ and focus on what is essential. Jesus is the reason for living.
  3. Can’t stand my family! Before entering family fellowship, spend time talking to God. Pick and choose our family interactions and conversations. Remind ourselves that we represent Him through our words, actions, and deeds as children of the Highest King. God expects us to operate in love. If, by chance, someone starts to raise our blood pressure, let us remind ourselves to operate from the fruit of the spirit and not take things personally. Remember, the reason for family fellowship is to share God’s love, appreciate each other’s differences, and live each day as if it was our last.  Live at the moment and be grateful for the opportunity to spend time with our loved ones during our weekend gatherings.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love” (1 John 4:7-8 NIV).
