“The moral and ethical principles traditionally upheld and transmitted within a family, as honesty, loyalty, industry, and faith” is Dictionary.com definition for Family Values. As we interact with loved ones, our family value recipe begins and ends in LOVE.

Regardless of our feelings, situations, and circumstances, our intimate relationships must proclaim LOVE versus self-protection, self-pride, self-glorification, and operating from the I-syndrome.

When the opportunity arises to disagree with family members, let us take a deep breath and decide to operate from the fruit of the spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV).

When the opportunity arises to gossip, backbite, or offer someone unwanted word of advice (negative). Let us remember, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesians 4:29 ESV).

When we do not feel like walking and serving others in love, let us make the verbal declarations:

“Love is patient; love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 NIV).
