During this season of cheer and radiant holiday decorations, we ask each other what do you want for Christmas and how do you and your loved ones celebrate Christmas? Before we enter into the spending spree zones, let us make sure we talk to God about our budget zones. This will help to eliminate overspending, overcharging, and receiving non-sufficient fund bank charges (NSF). We must remember not to rob God (tithes), to commit to buying gifts, not to agree sponsoring others, and not to engage in self-shopping based on our emotional state. As long as our motives for purchasing items and giving gifts glorify God and our current budget, we can celebrate this holiday through gift-giving. We must remember that gift-giving is based on the person’s needs, desires and wants versus what we want them to have. Gift-giving illustrates our acts of loving kindness in Christ. Holiday spending must incorporate the following suggestions:
We glorify God through our holiday spending.
We are blessing others through our acts of kindness and generosity in Christ.
We are not focusing on giving to receive recognition or being a gift reciprocal.
We are being good providers for our household by paying our bills, avoiding unnecessary accumulation of credit card debt, and keeping our financial commitment to God.
“ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:19-21)
