Depression has no age limit. Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) is a new diagnosis in the field of mental health. The age range is from children up to 18 years. Children with DMDD have frequent temper tantrums. These temper outbursts can interfere with the child’s ability to function at home, in school, or with their friends.
At times children are irritable, upset, or moody (just like adults). An occasional temper tantrum can happen as a part of growing up when we are not operating under self-control. Yet, when our children’s behavior patterns are usually irritable or angry, and we notice temper tantrums are frequent, intense, and ongoing, it may be signs of DMDD.
Symptoms of DMDD include:
- Severe temper outbursts at least three times a week
- Sad, irritable or angry mood almost every day
- Reaction is bigger than expected
- Child must be at least six years old
- Symptoms begin before age ten
- Symptoms are present for at least a year
- Child has trouble functioning in more than one place (e.g., home, school, and/or with friends)
Some of the children were previously diagnosed with bipolar disorder, even though they were not diagnosed with all of the signs and symptoms. Praise God; the good news is that it has been researched that the children who have been diagnosed with DMDD do not go on to have bipolar disorders in adulthood.
