When COVID-19 rapidly entered our personal and professional lifestyles, media informed us how stores were out of water supply. We entered confinement with, some of us, an oversupply of water, hand sanitizer and paper items. Now that we have the water, are we staying hydrated? We need to be aware of the extra sugar calories we are partaking since we’re on lockdown and transitioning out of house arrest (confinement). Our bodies are 60 percent water. In order to maintain a healthy immune system we must drink water.
While we are battling the coronavirus season, or other health challenges, relationships’ drama, financial crisis, etc we need to make sure we don’t overindulge in soda, energy drinks, or variety of sugar-based coffees. We need to drink water. Yes, water is essential and healthcare necessity; however, guideline on how much you should drink depends upon each person. We must take in consideration what one body’s needs for fluids.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is: “About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men; about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women. These recommendations cover fluids from water, other beverages and food. About 20 percent of daily fluid intake usually comes from food and the rest from drinks”.
Water modification principals are as follows: If you engage in exercising, you may sweat and need to drink extra water; working on socializing in a hot or human environment may need additional ways to avoid dehydration; our body loses fluids throughout the day, may need to drink more water or check with your medical physician for oral rehydration solution; pregnant or breed-feeding women need additional fluids. The Office on Women’s Health recommend “pregnant women drink about 10 cups (2.4 liters) of fluids daily and breast-feeding women” should “consume about 13 cups (3.1lters) of fluid a day”.
Take the time to listen to your body and intake water as needed.
