As a child growing up, I remember a phrase we use to sing whenever someone gossip about my sisters and I or just said something mean to us.

We sing the phrase like this: “sticks and stones may break my bones but your words will never harm me because God Loves Me”.

Yes, God did and still does love us; however, words hurt.

My mother would tell us to pray and tell God all about it.

The steps my mother offered and we followed were:

  1. Was there some truth in their words?
    1. If so, look at it as constructive criticism, which God was using them to help you grow in His grace.
  2. Were the words said to us out of anger?
    1. Pray for them, do not take it personally
    2. Make sure you did not do or say something that brought this on.
      1. Seek God in prayer for your answer.
    3. Remember, somethings are said out of spite.
      1. Everyone will not like you
      2. Pray for them because God tells us to pray for our enemies and do good to those who harm you.
        1. Start with prayer.
        2. Remember when you pray for someone, God will ease the pain and help you not to dislike them.
  • “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).

Tomorrow if you encounter someone who is speaking negative about you to your, or you are told, remember only God knows their heart. Keep your eyes on Jesus and ask God for guidance.
